    I’ve always had short hair, with the only exception having long hair from ages 7 to 13, because that’s when I went to a private school where it was mandatory. Because of this I don’t think I really could tell the difference in how I was treated since short hair has always been my default. I look forward to watching the video <3

    Love that you talk about that topic. I always cut my hair because people always told me its prettier long and long hair is just prettier on women/ girls. I got so annoyed so I started cutting it every time someone complimented me on my hair growth. Because to me thats nothing that influences ones beauty or femininity.

    i'm a girl and when i was 15 i shaved my head to donate my hair to one of those charities that makes wigs for kids who have cancer and instead of people ignoring it or saying some of that usual stuff about it being a nice thing to do or even being patronizing and going omg you're soooooo brave or whatever, they were mad at me for shaving my head. like my parents and family were actually completely fine with it (they said i'm allowed to have whatever haircut i want). and then i would meet strangers who would be genuinely infuriated that i decided to shave my head. they would dress it up with concern for how people would treat me or concern for my looks or something, or "sympathy" but they were genuinely pissed that i'd decided to shave my head. especially because a lot of them misgendered me because of it, they tried to blame me for "looking like a boy now" and for being "not pretty anymore" and so on. it's actually insane how much people care about a woman's hair.

    As a woman with disabilities, I’ve had doctors literally write ✍️ n my medical records assessments of my appearance as an index of my mental health. Like when my back was injured and I couldn’t raise my hands above my shoulders without pain, she recommended I be put on mental health medication because my hair was in a sloppy bun and I wore no makeup. I’m very careful now to go to a salon if I’m about to have my competence evaluated.

    i wore my hair really short from ages 14 to 21 and in the later years dyed it various bright colours, and men barely looked at me (fine by me, i'm gay) these past two years i've grown out my hair and dyed it blonde, and the change is staggering. in the days after i dyed it blonde it became immediately apparent that regular customers who usually barely acknowledged me were suddenly far more friendly and chatty. i didn't like it one bit.

    I first cut my hair into a pixie cut when I was 14, mostly to make it easier to manage because before I cut it it was super thick and bushy, but also because I wanted to donate it to a charity that make wigs for kids with cancer. I immediately noticed a difference in how I was treated, particularly by men and boys. I got asked so many times why I cut my hair, and when I replied that I did it cause I wanted to, people were almost affronted lol. It was like a personal insult that I would cut my hair, something that made me attractive to men, just because I wanted to.

    Incredibly interesting and please please please do that video on the butch identity. Not only are they ridiculed by straight culture and queer culture alike sometimes, but those who love them also face insults and disgust ("Why would you date a woman who looks like a man? Aren't you straight then?"). I think you hit the nail on the head when it comes to the Justin Bieber hate and I believe you can apply the same logic (break the gender binary/loads of female fans) to the hate that male kpop idols receive, especially by western cis men.

    It’s almost like people are mad bcuz how dare you cut something that so many women wish for, it’s even worse in the blk community. With that being said, sometimes women who do cut their hair off begin acting differently. Idk if it’s bcuz they are being treated differently or they are just ready for a genuine change.

    I have had a pixie cut on and off for the last 10 years. I found that strangers would compliment my hair on the street frequently when I had a pixie. I have never felt "hated" for my hair, but I do find this phenomenon with celebrities weird. I did find that men responded to me and sought me out more with short hair than long hair which I found interesting and unexpected. Other women were about 50/50.

  • @carter6024
    @carter6024 7 часов назад

    Disclaimer: AFAB agender person living in Los Angeles. I’ve had SHORT short hair for about ten years. Before I got it cut, but after I expressed interest in cutting it, a few people warned me that people would think I’m a lesbian (which is what I would prefer) and that men wouldn’t find me attractive. Many men do assume that I’m a lesbian, but there’s been no reduction in male attention. The most annoying kind is the kind of man who needs to let me know that he thinks most “women” can’t pull off short hair, but I should be pleased to know how well it suits me! If you have “feminine” facial features, if you’re slender… cutting your hair might not change the way people interact with you that much. I’m perceived as “stronger” with short hair but I had really hoped that the short hair would correlate with a decline in male attention. It didn’t. I shaved my head and everything is very much the same. It might deter the most traditional men, but the world has made it clear that my shaved head only accentuates my “feminine” features. For any AFAB folks considering cutting your hair (especially in a liberal area, which is all I can speak to), I still say go for it! But I wanted to add to the discourse what no one told me: depending on your features, short hair might accentuate your “feminine” features. People might simultaneously see you as tougher and fetishized you further. But if you’re gonna do it, do it for you. People are always going to find a way to hold women down. Just be aware that if you’re used to the discourse of short hair being something that makes you less attractive, you might be disappointed to know that people will still see you as a beautiful woman above all else.

    • @Aelffwynn
      @Aelffwynn 7 часов назад

      Yeah, depending on face and body shape, it can look really different. If you ever want to try something different, maybe do a bit of analysis of your face shape, body type, etc, so you can find the hairstyle that will accentuate the features you want accentuated. I realize those styling systems have been used to stick people in rigid categories, but they can also be used to go against those standards. (For example, during her early career, Billie Eilish went against traditional styling tips for her face/body, because she WANTED an edgy, rebellious look. On a different person, her style may have looked traditionally cute, even childlike. On her, it looked different.) People will always TRY to hold women (and anyone in a femme-appearing body) down. They don't always succeed.

    I'd add that people in the past covered their hair for cleanliness reasons as well as societal reasons. When you have to heat up a bunch of water to wash all that hair (potentially in a cold room pre central heating), you're likely to want to stretch out the amount of time between washes by keeping your hair cleaner

    On the topic of conforming to beauty standards. I consider myself a feminine woman, however im not 'ultrafeminine'. I dont do my nails, i dont do my lashes, i dont wear makeup every single day, im body building, i lack any knowledge about how to do my hair to make it look 'produced', so i simply wear it as it is which is just straight hair. But i consider myself feminine because im somewhat there. I think women could ask themselves why all this extra effort. I mean, i know class has a lot to do with it as there are richer women the ones who can have their lashes, hair, nails, everything done etc every single day. A lot of every day women are normalizing these procedures to a point that i think they should reconsider. Im talking the nails every month, lashes every month, and such expensses that can sum up to hundreds or thousands. We can still be feminine and not be that ultra feminine stereoptype every single moment and day of our lives.

    i was called a hermaphrodite in school after i cut my hair short (i was actually inspired by miley cyrus). no one should be called that as a slur but it was especially ironic because i was a pretty "girly" girl, with typical girl interests. just because i had short hair my gender performance was questioned? it was really difficult as a teen but kind of an interesting experience too, to know how different some people will treat you.

    Short hair often contradicts the persona that most celebrities try to give off. For example, I hated it on Jennifer Lawrence but I didn't mind it with Emma Watson because short hair matched Emma's counterculture public persona a lot better than Jennifer's "I'm the next onscreen IT girl".

  • @radrose4864
    @radrose4864 8 часов назад

    Yeah when you list all of those celebrities one after the other… the pattern emerges really clearly. So crazy. I grew up with a mother who was feminist in a way where feminine things were demonized. I also had curly hair unlike anyone else in my family. I wanted to be pretty and wear makeup. I like cooking and cleaning and art and domestic stuff. But was made to feel like a failure as a feminist because of these things. I was conventionally unattractive and extremely self conscious until I discovered how to get pretty in my own. And I too experienced whiplash by suddenly being treated so much better in the world once I was pretty. But on the flip side I also had to deal with bosses who I admired trying to sleep with me - and I was totally unprepared to deal with it.
